If your town isn't listed, call anyway. Distance mostly affects scheduling, and jobs farther out are often grouped with nearby work on the same day.
Do electrical permits work the same everywhere?
No. Permits depend on where the property sits, and each office sets its own process.
- Inside Springfield city limits, the City of Springfield's Building Development Services handles electrical permits. The city requires a permit for all electrical work except a few small tasks, and a city-licensed master electrician must be listed on most permits. Call the permit desk at 417-864-1585.
- In unincorporated Greene County, the county's Building Regulations office issues permits when electrical systems are installed, altered, repaired, or removed. Inspections are scheduled at 417-868-4015, a day ahead.
- In unincorporated Christian County, the county's Building Regulations office requires permits for electrical work too. Applications are made in person at 1106 W. Jackson St. in Ozark, and the office's number is 417-581-6064.
- In Nixa, Ozark, Republic, and other cities, check with that city's own building office, since each one runs its own permits.
Everywhere in Missouri, call 811, Missouri One-Call, before digging for a generator gas line, a trench to a detached garage, or an outdoor charger.
Does the utility change from town to town?
Yes. Inside Springfield, City Utilities provides electric service and sets the rules for meters, service upgrades, and generator connections. Some surrounding towns and rural areas are served by other utilities or electric cooperatives, which have their own requirements for service upgrades and reconnects.
That's one reason a visit comes before a price on panel and generator jobs. Two houses the same size, one in Springfield and one outside Ozark, can involve different utilities, different permit offices, and different inspection schedules.
What kinds of jobs come up in each area?
The work is much the same across the region, but some patterns show up:
- Panel upgrades and rewiring in older Springfield neighborhoods
- EV chargers and added circuits in newer subdivisions in Nixa, Ozark, and Republic
- Generators and transfer switches on rural lots and homes on wells
- Lighting, fans, and repairs in homes of every age
See the services list for details on each one.
