Does Missouri license electricians?
Not at the state level for most residential work. Licensing is local. That means the rules depend on where the house is:
- Inside Springfield city limits, the city tests and certifies master and journeyman electricians, according to its Trade Certifications page. A city-certified master electrician must be listed on most electrical permits.
- In Nixa, contractors need a Nixa contractor's license, with a $50 application and proof of workers' compensation, according to the city's building permits page.
- In Ozark, Republic, and other cities, each city runs its own permits and contractor rules. Call the city's building office.
- In unincorporated Greene and Christian counties, the county building regulations offices issue electrical permits.
A license from one city doesn't automatically carry over to the next. An electrician who works in Springfield needs a Nixa license to work in Nixa, for example.
How do you check an electrician in Springfield?
- Ask for the master electrician's name and the company's license or certification details.
- Check it with the city. The City of Springfield has a "Confirm Your Contractor's License" page on its website, linked from the Trade Certifications page. You can also call Building Development Services at 417-864-1585, weekdays from 7:30 a.m. to 4 p.m.
- Confirm a permit will be pulled for work that needs one. Inside city limits, that's most electrical work except small tasks like replacing a light bulb or a defective breaker.
- Ask for proof of insurance, both general liability and workers' compensation.
- Get a written estimate that says what's included: permit, inspection, materials, and patching.
Why does the permit matter so much?
The permit is how the city confirms a certified master electrician is responsible for the work, and it's what triggers the inspection. It also matters later:
- City Utilities won't reconnect after a service upgrade until the city inspection passes.
- Buyers and their inspectors look for permits on panel and wiring work.
- Insurance claims can get complicated if a fire traces back to unpermitted work.
The city also penalizes work done without a permit. Its residential fee schedule set the charge at twice the permit fee plus $200, so skipping the permit rarely saves money. Ask the city for current fees.
What does City Utilities' contractor list tell you?
City Utilities publishes an electrical contractors list for customers in some of its programs. To be listed, a company had to be licensed as the City of Springfield requires, hold a master electrician license, have been in business at least two years, carry liability and workers' compensation insurance, use marked service vehicles, and agree not to subcontract, according to the January 2025 list. City Utilities says the list isn't an endorsement and suggests getting at least three bids.
Those criteria make a useful checklist even when you're hiring someone who isn't on it.
What are the warning signs?
Be careful when someone:
- Says no permit is needed for a panel change, a new circuit, or a service upgrade inside city limits
- Won't give a master electrician's name or a license you can check
- Wants most of the money up front in cash
- Offers to "run it off the dryer outlet" or backfeed a generator without a transfer switch
- Shows up after a storm, door to door, from out of the area
Frequently asked questions
Can I do my own electrical work in Springfield?
Homeowners can pull certain permits for a home they live in, but some work requires a licensed contractor. Ask Building Development Services at 417-864-1585 before you start.
Is a journeyman electrician allowed to do my job?
Journeymen do much of the hands-on work, but in Springfield a certified master electrician is generally the one listed on the permit and responsible for it.
Does a Springfield license work in Nixa or Ozark?
Not automatically. Each city sets its own rules. Nixa requires its own contractor's license.
What should a written estimate include?
The scope of work, materials, the permit and inspection, any City Utilities coordination, patching, the total price, and payment terms.
