What do standby generators cost?
From ThePricer's July 2026 guide:
- Natural gas whole-house setup, installed: $6,000 to $11,000
- 17 to 20 kW class, installed planning range: $7,000 to $11,000
- 22 to 25 kW class, installed planning range: $9,500 to $24,000
- Transfer switch installation: $1,200 to $1,600, about $1,450 on average
- Gas line installation: $400 to $1,500 or more
- A worked 22 kW example, with the unit, transfer switch, gas line, pad, and permits: about $9,764
- Annual maintenance: $200 to $600
The generator itself is usually less than half the total. The transfer switch, gas line, pad, permits, and electrical connection make up the rest.
Why do so many Springfield homes look at generators?
The Ozarks have a record of long outages. The January 2007 ice storm left more than 75,000 City Utilities customers in Springfield without power, some for several weeks, KY3 reported. In April 2025, a storm with extremely high winds cut power to about 50,000 City Utilities customers, the largest outage since 2007, according to KY3.
A winter outage is the expensive one. A furnace blower, a well pump, and a sump pump all need electricity, so a house can be cold, without water, and at risk of a flooded basement in the same outage.
What pushes a generator quote higher?
Size. A unit that runs the whole house, including central air, costs far more than one sized for the furnace, refrigerator, well pump, and a few circuits. A load calculation shows what you really need.
Fuel. Natural gas homes connect to the existing line. Homes without gas need a propane tank, which adds cost and a tank permit or lease.
Gas line distance and size. A generator next to the gas meter is a short run. A long run, or a meter too small for the generator plus the furnace and water heater, means more work. The gas company may need to upsize the meter.
Transfer switch type. A whole-house switch at the service costs more than one that serves a few circuits.
Panel condition. An old or full panel sometimes has to be replaced or upgraded first. See panel upgrades.
Placement. Generators need clearance from windows, doors, and vents, and a level pad. A tight lot or a long trench adds cost. Call 811, Missouri One-Call, before any digging.
What permits and utility steps are involved?
Inside Springfield city limits, the electrical work needs a city permit through Building Development Services, with a city-certified master electrician on the permit. Gas work has its own requirements.
City Utilities' service standards require customers to notify it when installing an emergency generator, and say a generator can't run in parallel with or feed back into the utility system. That's what the transfer switch is for: the house is connected to the utility or the generator, never both. In Nixa, coordinate with Nixa Utilities instead. See our Nixa page.
How do you compare generator quotes?
Ask each contractor whether the price includes:
- The load calculation and sizing
- The generator, pad, and mounting
- The transfer switch, automatic or manual
- The gas line from the meter, or the propane tank and line
- Permits and inspections
- Startup, testing, and the first service visit
- The warranty, and who services the unit
Also ask about portable generators with a properly installed inlet and interlock or transfer switch. They cost much less and can cover the essentials.
Frequently asked questions
What size generator do I need?
It depends on what you want to run. Essentials like the furnace, refrigerator, well pump, and lights often fit a smaller unit. Whole-house coverage with central air usually means 20 kW or more. A load calculation settles it.
Can I just plug a portable generator into a dryer outlet?
No. Backfeeding through an outlet can energize the utility lines and injure line workers, and City Utilities prohibits generators that feed back into its system. Use a transfer switch or an interlock with a proper inlet.
How long does a standby generator installation take?
The installation itself is often one to two days. Scheduling the permit, gas work, and inspections adds time, and demand jumps after a big storm.
Does a generator need maintenance?
Yes. Standby units run short self-tests and need oil, filter, and battery service. ThePricer's guide puts annual maintenance at $200 to $600.
